Rich Mullins was born on October 21st, 1955. In the 80s he became known for his music that was creative, confessional, and filled with praise. His music has been sung in churches ever since, and is probably known for his song Awesome God.
A few days after recording some demo songs for an album, Rich died in an automobile accident in September of 1997 at the age of 44. Years later, his songs still hold a place as some of most creative and beautiful in Christian Music.
We asked some of our staff about their favorite Rich Mullins songs:
Neil Stavem (host of Connecting Faith and Program Director for Faith Radio) – All the way My Savior Leads Me:
“I always enjoyed the hymns of Franny Crosby, and thought that Rich Mullins did a nice rendition of his song of hers.”
Paul Perrault (morning host for KFNW-FM, Fargo) – Elijah.
It’s almost prophetic of his life and death…and who he was. “If they treat me like a pauper, if they dine me like a prince. If they lay me with my fathers, or my ashes scatter in the wind…I don’t care. But when I leave, I wanna go out like Elijah..”
Brian Gullikson (Faith Radio Engineer) – The Color Green
“A friend let me borrow the CD this song is on, and this is the song that has stuck with me the most.”
Justin VanNingen (producer, web editor for FaithRadioNet.com) – Creed
“In addition to the Hammer Dulcimer that Rich uses throughout the song, the words are a beautiful rendition of The Apostles Creed. After his death, Third Day did a fine tribute to Rich and this song as well.”
Carl Bliss (FaithRadioNet.com Contributing Writer) Calling Out Your Name
“This is the song I always think of when I’m driving through the prairie!”
Do You Have a Favorite Rich Mullins Song?

Oh so many to choose from … Hold Me Jesus is among my favorites.
Jennifer,
I love that song — when my father was seriously ill in the Hospital while I was in college it came on our sister station (KTIS-FM) as I had just heard he was rushed to a bigger hospital and in worse condition. It’s meant a lot to me ever since.
I’m with Carl…”Calling Out Your Name” is my favorite. Love the line “Run wild with the hope.”
That’s a great line. I hadn’t stopped to think of that one.
