In 1988 my sister, Marie Oaks, fasted and prayed for me every Wednesday in November. Then she invited me to the Christmas Program in December. The music stayed with me all day, and that evening I prayed for salvation, led by my brother-in-law, Andy. It just made so much sense all of a sudden. The next morning, for the first time I thought about God before I even opened my eyes. The overwhelming knowledge that everything was going to be alright held and carried me—a brand new concept, a brand new security.
They not only led me to Jesus, they also saw to it that I became His disciple. Every Sunday, they drove from St.Paul to Minneapolis to bring me back to St. Paul to go to church. They fed me twice that day, brought me to Sunday evening service, then home to Minneapolis. They also drove me to and from the mid-week service, discipleship classes on Thursdays, and one Friday a month for ‘House Meeting.”
(Thankfully, I moved to St. Paul after a couple of months!)
I’d read my little orange Gideon New Testament during breaks at the restaurant where I worked and I’d suddenly have a question I needed an immediate answer to. Poor Pastor Denny. How many evenings did I call him from the payphone to ask him a question like, “What does ‘propitiation’ mean?” And he never said he didn’t have time.
I have debts like these all over town. : )
